Ache Around the Lake 2012

Ache Around The Lake Logo2012’s Ache Around the Lake was held on September 22nd – a warm and pleasant early fall morning.  Almost 200 participants enjoyed the Ache and Ouch as a large group watched from the sidelines.

From the 2012 Ache proceeds, St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation funded upgrades and renovations to the Center of Behavioral Medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital in Columbus, North Carolina.

The Center of Behavioral Medicine—a 10-bed, short-term residential, geriatric psychiatry facility—is well-known in North and South Carolina for its patient-centric care and exceptionally warm ambience.  The average length of stay is about 10 days.  The Center has folded quilts on the foot of patients’ beds, artwork and decorative quilts on display throughout, comfortable patient sitting areas, a spacious and well-appointed dining area, and an activities area.  They also have an organ and two televisions for patient use.

Because the Center’s physical plant has been without major repairs or renovations for more than five years, the unit was starting to show the wear of its 40+ years of continuous use.  Despite that, the reported levels of patient satisfaction are consistently very high.

In 2012, our goal was to raise $25,000 to help cover the costs of painting, new flooring in the nurses’ station and main hallway, general repairs, two new couches, upgraded visitor chairs for patient rooms, two new televisions, and other enhancements throughout the Center.

The upgrades further improved patient care and satisfaction levels, enhanced the unit’s stellar reputation in the region, and ensured that the Center of Behavioral Medicine will continue to provide exceptional care close to home..
